Freeways, by number
- I-5 — The coastal spine: Camp Pendleton → Oceanside → Carlsbad → Encinitas → Del Mar → La Jolla → Downtown → National City → Chula Vista → border. North Coast Corridor HOV/express lanes in progress (VERIFY status).
- I-805 — The inland bypass: Sorrento Valley → Kearny Mesa → Mid-City → National City → Chula Vista. The way most South Bay commuters reach UTC.
- I-15 — North–south inland: Escondido → Rancho Bernardo → Poway/Scripps Ranch (via Mira Mesa Blvd) → Miramar → Kearny Mesa → Downtown. Express lanes with reversible direction.
- I-8 — East County's artery: Alpine → El Cajon → La Mesa → Mission Valley → Ocean Beach. Joins I-15 and I-805 in Mission Valley.
- SR-52 — Santee → Scripps Ranch/Tierrasanta → Kearny Mesa → La Jolla. The East-County-to-biotech connector.
- SR-56 — Carmel Valley → Rancho Peñasquitos → I-15. Links the coast (Del Mar Heights) to Poway and Scripps Ranch.
- SR-78 — Oceanside → Vista → San Marcos → Escondido. North County's east–west corridor; chronically congested at peak (VERIFY improvement projects).
- SR-94 — Downtown → Lemon Grove → Spring Valley → Rancho San Diego. The Southeast and East County link.
- SR-125 — Santee → El Cajon → Spring Valley → Chula Vista/Otay Mesa. South of SR-54 it is the South Bay Expressway toll road (VERIFY current tolls).
- SR-67 / SR-76 / SR-79 — SR-67: Santee → Poway → Ramona. SR-76: Oceanside → Bonsall → Pala. SR-79: Julian → Cuyamaca. Backcountry two-lane routes.

The projects that change which cities are "close." Each is a reason a commute that is hard today may not be in 2030 — and each is subject to funding and schedule risk.
- Del Mar bluffs rail realignment / tunnel (LOSSAN corridor) — would move Coaster/Surfliner tracks off the eroding bluffs. VERIFY: SANDAG planning status.
- I-5 North Coast Corridor express lanes, Oceanside → La Jolla — phased through the 2030s. VERIFY.
- SANDAG airport transit connection (Downtown ↔ San Diego International). VERIFY.
- Purple Line / Central Mobility concepts (South Bay ↔ Kearny Mesa ↔ Sorrento Valley) in the Regional Plan. VERIFY.
- SR-11 / Otay Mesa East Port of Entry — opens a third border crossing with toll lanes; affects Chula Vista/Otay Ranch and East Chula Vista demand. VERIFY opening date.
- SR-78 corridor improvements (Oceanside–Escondido). VERIFY.
